Hurricane 1/2

I did it,
I ran the half marathon that I almost called off a couple of weeks ago,
and it blew... literally.
As in the craziest head-wind I've ever run in.
I would compare it to running in actual "hurricane" type winds,
but then I'd sound like I was just trying to make a bad pun,
as opposed to legitimately explaining how crazy the weather was.

An extremely cold starting line (i.e. in the 20's with the wind chill)
Strong head-wind about 11 miles out of the 13.1.
Running into the sunrise the whole way without sunglasses
and a hill that, in my father-in-law's words, would "put hair on your chest" (1 mile up and over a mountain)...

It could have possibly been the best race of my life
if we had started at the end and ran the course backwards...
However,
due to all of the aforementioned conditions,
it wasn't.

I wasn't able to stick to my brother's "race schedule",
therefore not finishing in 1 hour and 59 minutes, as planned.
We finished in 2:08,
7 minutes slower than my previous 1/2 marathon,
but exponentially more difficult conditions.
I'm still not sure if I should be proud of myself for pulling out a tough race,
or mad for not reaching my goal.

FYI- My exceptionally fast, (as in sub 7-minute mile average) marathoner brother, Jared, is the one who talked me in to running this race with him.  He wanted to run with me because he claimed the tax season (he's a CPA) made him "fat and out-of-shape".  Apparently, he thought my pace would be more manageable for him (haha).  However, if it weren't for me holding him back, I'm sure he could have won the whole damn thing.

Regardless of the wind, we had a really great time.
Free place to stay (thanks uncle Rick!)
entertaining audio books,
red rocks, sunshine and blue skies,
delicious food (Poncho and Lefty's),
a 2-year-old that did really well in the car,
fun with family,
and a weekend in a king-sized bed

Jared: Contrary to how it sounds, I'm really glad you talked me in to this!

All you have to do is think about how slow Taylor would have run it, then you'll feel better about yourself.

I'd love some Poncho and Lefty's about now. Wish we could have been there, with our kids keeping you up the night before.

I am so proud of you!!!! You ran a very hard race in very good time! I am impressed, jealous, proud, awed and just plain tired!!! I love Pancho and Lefty's in St George. I am homesick. . . . add that to my list ha ha ha ha. Anyway, good job Crystal!

Doesn't it just suck to miss your target? I expect to PR every race, and every race it feels like I am slower than the last. And every year I get older, it seems like just getting out of bed to run is a PR. Heck, at my age, having a good bowel movement is something to celebrate. 2:08 into the wind is not too shabby. You are a Rock Star in my book.

woot woot! Way to go, you totally rock! 2:08 is amazing even though you didn't reach your goal, in those conditions I doubt anyone did. Jealous you got to get out and enjoy the sun, but not jealous of the race part :)

You did great! Especially cause the weather did SUCK!! You are such a sport and let Jared talk you into these things....glad it's you and not me!!

The good food and company made it worth it, right??

It was fun to see you guys even though the weather was stinky. Today as I folded the long pants and jackets from this weekend I just was shaking my head cause it is like 85 again!! Argh!

Hahaha! Dang! I was thinking when you said it "blew" that it was going to be this hilarious and embarrassing story about runner's trots (which I have become all too familiar with since LeRand started running, he almost always has an "episode" while running, some of which are so hilarious, and disgusting).

You go, Crystal, I still have yet to break 3 miles. AHH! It's all I can do to get three but I think I've set up a mental block that says three is the most I can do. I've been running three miles and never more. Any help you can offer me?

And to answer your question, I guess I am vegan, without the PETA attachment. Day 5 and going strong! And the temptation and social opportunities to cave have been in full force. Oh, and I need to talk to you, so I'm going to call you soon. Love you!
